Kumba aims for 81M t of ore by 2015
The Kumba Iron Ore project which occupies a geographical space in SA between Sishen (Northern Cape) and Saldahna Bay (West Coast), aims to up its delivery capacity to 81 million tons of iron ore per year by the year 2015. The ore is mined in Sishen and transported via a dedicated train line to Saldahna Bay where it is shipped to its markets. The current production is 31 million tons per year. Key to the achievement of this projected target are the dedicated rail transport system and the harbour. The OREX rail transport system, the harbour and many of the support companies in the harbour are currently certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 by the SABS. These management systems ensure the success of all the support structures in supporting the project. SGS will compete for the business. 12 M t of the iron ore could come from Senegal.
